Kathleen Shannon works at Dick's Market Garden, a local Massachusetts market garden that sells fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs year round.
I recently attended the 2013 JEA/NSPA National Convention which was held in Boston this year. (To find out more about that, check out my post on "The Great Pizza Escapade") Along with other Broadcast students from all around the country, I participated in a Broadcast Package contest, in which we were given four hours to find, shoot, and edit a story.
About 20 minutes after setting out from the convention center, I spotted a group of people setting up a farmer's market in Copley Square. After my disastrous attempts to find an interview the previous day, (refer to "The Great Pizza Escapade" I was really relieved when they said they would be willing to do an interview. I spent about an hour filming them set up the farm stand and the fruit and vegetables.
One of the workers, Kathleen Shannon, although originally a bit unsure about the interview, gave me some great insight into the process that the market garden goes through to deliver the freshest harvest to their customers. By the point I had finished filming, I had a little over two hours left and rushed back to the convention center to begin editing. It would be fair to say that editing to meet the deadline was the most stressful experience I've had of yet in my broadcast career.
After turning in the completed video two minutes before the deadline, I was shocked when I received a honorable mention award at the award ceremony two days later. I had a great time at this year's JEA/NSPA Convention, and am really looking forward to next year's which is being held in Washington D.C..
I hope you enjoy
