With the release of the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens on November 28, millions of voices cried out with excitement. Unfortunately, some prejudiced fans have responded negatively to the lead of the movie, John Boyega, being black. In two minutes I'll give my thoughts on how John Boyega's casting can help increase diversity in Hollywood movies and lead to a more accepting society.

I've been a Star Wars fan for about as far back as I can remember, so seeing the trailer for the first time was a really emotional and awe-inspiring experience.  (It was so awe-inspiring in fact, that I may or may not have watched in 40 some times.)  I was in such a good mood seeing how everyone was so excited about Star Wars again, that is until, I read some of the comments under the trailer.  While the majority of fans and myself were thrilled to see a glimpse of a galaxy far far away, there was a depressing number of people who criticized the movie simply because the main character, played by John Boyega, is black.  I've seen plenty of negative reactions to other movies due to the casting of a minority, and it's always really bothered me.  Star Wars in particular, celebrates diversity.  Some of people's favorite characters are little green space wizards or walking carpets/bear creatures.  The fact that there are people who can't get over a human character who looks different from them is really enraging.  I decided that this would be the perfect subject for my broadcast tech final.  I spent a lot of time creating the mock scenes in the video above.  I actually spent about 10 hours creating them.  Writing the script was a bit of a challenge but I'm happy with the end result.
